If your new or used RV has been sitting for awhile, there are some things you should check before heading out for your first road trip of the year. Our RV care tips can help keep your RV in good shape, though. Make sure to check the following on your RV so you can travel with confidence and peace of mind!
- Check your battery levels and refill if necessary.
- Clean up the vents and intake on your A/C. Replace the filter if needed.
- If you’re driving a motorhome, check under the hood to make sure all hoses and clamps are connected and there are no leaks.
- Safety equipment like carbon monoxide and smoke detectors should be tested and cleaned – replace the batteries that need it.
- Lubricate any slideouts.
- Unwanted vermin, critters, and other pests don’t need much space to get inside and wreak havoc. Check for spaces as small as a quarter-inch that shouldn’t be there. Fill or repair holes or cracks.
- Speaking of holes and cracks being a gateway for damage, the same goes for water damage. Check the seals and seams around doors and windows. Repair as needed.
- Check your tire pressure, and add air to any tire that needs it. Check the rims and the tread for cracks, stress, and wear and tear.
- Check to make sure headlights and brake lights are functional before heading out.
- Look for worn or cracked welds on the A frame section of your trailer, and make sure all nuts/bolts are tight. Being on the road can loosen and damage hardware, so make sure it’s nice and tight.
- Check your propane tank for leaks, and while you’re at it, make sure it’s up to date and not expired.
- Check all things power-related: outlets, switches, 12V power, water pump, appliances, etc. Additionally, you’ll want to run your generator at about 50% and replace the gas in it if it’s been sitting there for awhile.
- Clear any debris from the roof of your RV. Don’t just trust the wind to blast it off while you’re driving down the road. A build up of debris can cause damage to the roof, and taking some time to manually clear it off gives you the opportunity to check for cracks or other damage.
