Selecting the perfect RV, whether new or used, involves considering several factors to ensure it meets your family’s needs. Key elements include the floor plan, size, and the number of travelers it can accommodate. However, one critical aspect often overlooked is matching the RV to your intended towing vehicle. Towing an RV that exceeds your vehicle’s tow rating can strain the engine and potentially derail your travel plans.
Fortunately, our online tow guide simplifies determining your vehicle’s maximum towing capacity! This capacity accounts for various factors, including:
- Passenger weight
- Added accessories
- Current liquids in tanks
- Added cargo, such as camping gear, food, tools, and camping chairs

Terms & Definitions
If you’re new to RVing, you might encounter some unfamiliar terms. Here’s a quick guide to help you understand these terms:
- Dry or Shipped Weight: The weight of the RV as shipped from the manufacturer, excluding the weight of passengers, cargo, liquids, or dealership-selected upgrades/options.
- Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW): The combined current weight of the RV, including passengers, cargo, and liquids. Adding more increases the GVW.
- Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): The maximum allowed weight of the RV, including all passengers, cargo, and liquids.
- Cargo Weight: The total weight of passengers and everything you pack in the RV.
- Tongue/Hitch Weight: The weight/pressure from the trailer tongue or coupler applied to your vehicle’s bumper hitch.
- Pin Weight: The weight/pressure from the fifth wheel king pin to the hitch in your truck bed.
- Payload Capacity: The amount of weight you can safely add to the bed of your truck.
- Max Towing Capacity: The maximum weight your vehicle can safely tow, calculated by adding the RV’s GVW with the weight of all passengers, cargo, and liquids in your towing vehicle.
